PRIMM, NV - Canadian kart racer Lorenzo Mandarino was back in action this past weekend as he posted a pair of solid top five finishes in his return to action in the Western Division of the Snap-on Stars of Karting national championship. After missing the second Western stop while competing in Europe, the Burnaby, BC resident was back running in the ICC 125cc shifterkart category with Sonoma, CA’s KLS Racing, the importer of the Italian-made GP chassis. The race – the Desert MINI Grand Prix - was held on a temporary circuit laid out in the expansive parking lot of the Buffalo Bills Resort and Casino in Primm, NV – just 30 minutes West of Las Vegas – putting all the drivers on a level playing field. A strong fourth on Saturday was followed by a challenging Sunday that required Mandarino to fight through a problem that was eventually diagnosed as an engine issue, one that left him significantly down on power. Despite getting visibly pulled on the straightaway, he was able to bring his GP home in fifth at the checker to cap the weekend. |

Canadian karting phenom Lorenzo Mandarino continues to ride the wave of excitement that began at last year’s SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas, where he won the headline SuperPro 125cc class over a stacked field to put his name among the elite in North America. Coming off an amazing outing to begin the Stars of Karting national championship in Norman, OK two weeks ago, Mandarino headed straight to Italy last Thursday to make his European debut in the first round of the Italian Open Masters Championship in La Conca, Italy. Running as a factory driver for the GP Kart Racing team in the ICC category, Mandarino was forced to work through the Last Chance race to make the main events after encountering trouble in one of the heat races. Lorenzo rose to the occasion and stormed from 30th to tenth in the first final and then fought back from a rough start to come home ninth in the second main, completing his impressive record of two top tens results. Mandarino now sits tenth in the point standings. |

Despite the fact that the entire event was run in rainy conditions, kart racer Lorenzo Mandarino left the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex with great memories of the outing. The Canadian was feeling very good about his performances in the opening round of the Snap-on Stars of Karting national championship series, a race that was held on the March 17-19. In extremely challenging conditions, Mandarino ran in both of the program’s headline classes, the only driver to do so during the weekend. In the ICA class, the 19 year-old stormed to a strong podium finish, taking second place overall, posting the fastest lap of the race in the process. Mandarino also ran in the ICC shifter kart category and overcame a difficult beginning, making it into the main through the Last Chance Qualifier before driving from 34th to eighth during the main event. He also set yet another fast lap during his drive through the field, making it two for two for the weekend. |
